Days filled with gratitude as the sun rises over the ocean and into our little home on wheels. Excitement abounds as the winds set our sails for a course unknown. Will it be an exotic location, eating street food, taking sunrise photo’s and watching the stars? Or will it lead us into the graffiti covered toilet block in the beach car park we just pulled into.



Wherever this path is leading us, its comforting to know we’re in it together. Riding through our ups and downs, as the storm contrasts the clear calm waters of our journey. Having the freedom to adjust our path, we both use our intuition when making decisions, trusting our feelings and allowing ourselves to be guided by the flow of energies. The transient life is a wholesome lifestyle which bares the fruit of universal opportunities. We feel good, better than good,  it just goes to show when you live out your soul’s purpose the universe sends its gratitude.



We call it the Barefoot Smiles Life – it’s mindful travel, lifestyle over luxury and inspired connections. This lifestyle has us feeling more motivated and focused than ever before and has inspired some seriously big dreams for our future. Life on the road in our Toyota Hiace camper van, Luna has been amazing. She has taught us to reflect on what really matters. Life in tight quarters takes some getting used to and has been a huge learning curve. Our lovable Luna has provided the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the practice of living with less. Less stress, less things, less wasted time.



Feeling the salt on our skin, practising yoga, fuelling our bodies with healthy, delicious food. Its all rainbows and sunshine! Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while living in a van hasn’t been without its trials. But the learning process has given us the knowledge and focus to share our journey with others.



We have created a healthy eating plan for conscious travellers. Our free E-Book ‘Healthy Eating Plan’ can be download here: Free Healthy Eating Plan. The E-book was inspired by our personal desire to remain healthy while on the road. The plan consists of meals that meet the body’s nutritional needs while being affordable and simple to prepare. One of our favourites is Brown Rice Sushi. It is our go-to for a quick healthy lunch or dinner, it’s easy to prepare, delicious and full of goodness.



Our intention is to show others how we maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle while living in our van and to bring awareness to alternative lifestyles. No white picket fence, just sandy white beaches.

Barefoot Smiles Life 



Brown Rice Sushi

Preparing enough sushi rolls for dinner can be time consuming so instead we put the rice, fillings and condiments on the table.

We make and roll the sushi as we’re eating – less time consuming, no waste and more fun.


Makes two serves

  • 6 Nori sheets
  • 2 cups of brown rice
  • 1 carrot grated
  • 1 beetroot grated
  • 1 zucchini grated
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 1 cucumber sliced
  • Coz lettuce leaves



  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi paste


Optional fillings:

  • Canned or raw fish
  • Avocado
  • Tofu or tempe


What to do:

  1. Add brown rice to a pot with 4 cups of water cover and bring to boil then reduce to a low heat until all water is evaporated
  2. Prepare vegetables and arrange on a large serving plate
  3. To prepare sushi lay out nori and cover half of the sheet with 4 heaped tablespoons of rice
  4. Arrange vegetables and condiments length ways on the rice
  5. Starting from the end covered with rice roll away from you
  6. Cut roll into bite size pieces with a wet knife or eat whole
